you knew
the distance was never
between you and yourself

knowing
and choosing
so you stood for a long time
on the riverbank
watching the water
knowing exactly
which shore called to you
knowing exactly
what crossing it would require
and perhaps courage
is not the discovery
of a new continent
perhaps courage
is simply
to stop saying
that you do not know
when you do
to stop calling it uncertainty
when it is consequence
to stop waiting
for permission
from a world
that cannot grant it
you were never lost
only standing at the edge
of a life you always recognized
learning
slowly
that knowing the way
and taking it
are not the same thing
